The Details
Design an identity for an online exhibition by the Tate Liverpool celebrating to collaboration between visual artist Robert Mapplethorpe and musical artist Patti Smith. The identity components would include a logo, poster, website and exhibition item.
The Concept
Looking at all three disciplines I found one common factor, the use of grids. Whether as a guitar tab, a guide for a photograph, or a layout for a collage. Although Patti and Robert’s work was anarchic rather than organised, I wanted to subvert expectations of the grid and use it to create something with a haphazard feel to it, in keeping with their values. The grid is combined with some handdrawn elements to maintain the punk feel.
