Poor Fishermen's Catch

Despite India's rapid economic growth in the last decade or so, there are still millions of Indians struggling to earn their daily bread. I witnessed this first hand during our recent trip to South India.

This group of 25-30 poor fishermen have no boat to go far in the sea, where they can hope to get a big catch. Instead, they a small boat made of 2 wooden logs, has bare enough place for two people to sit on their knees with the fishing net. Commercial fishing companies have big motor boats with professional equipment. These boats go far inside the sea and generally get a big haul.

Once these poor fishermen are out in the sea, they throw the net with one man remaining in the sea to guide the net. Rest of the fishermen, pull the net to the shore with their hands. It takes around 4 hours of hard work in the scorching Sun. The catch is shared among the fishermen, which is hardly enough to make ends meet for their families.
