The illustration you see here are all done in Adobe Illustrator. Everything starts from drawing outlines based on a picture. I am trying to recreate the “Gong Bi 工笔” technique as practiced by the Chinese thousands of years ago. “Gong Bi” when translated directly to English means “Work Pen”. It involves using very detailed brush strokes to give the painting realism. This is not to be confused with “Shui-mo 水墨”which is the watercolour technique whereby brush strokes are quicker and thicker.

Once the illustrations are done, I will either colour it directly in Adobe Illustator or transferred into Adobe Photoshop for touch ups like adding colours, shadows and textures.

I really hope you enjoy my artwork. I also hope that my artwork can help to inspire you and bring out the genius within you.

FAQ
Why do you draw?
I love to fill up my spare time with something fun. When I draw, it is as if I am in a relaxed meditative state because my mind is focused in one direction. It’s wonderful.

Does it take a lot of time to finish a project?
Not sure. Coz when you are enjoying yourself you don’t even bothered to look at the time. Usually, I will split a project into few days to complete. Maximum a week.

Why did you choose Chinese arts?
First of all, I’m a Chinese. Haha. Secondly, I noticed there are already many arts out there with signature artistic skills. Apart from that, many artworks are repetitions of others’ work anyway and its getting kinda bored. Therefore, I have to think outside the box and do something complete new. I decided to recreate ancient Chinese paintings using modern softwares.

Is it difficult to draw or paint digital Chinese arts?
Yes, it is. There are many limits as to what a digital brush or pen can do compared to real brushes used in Chinese paintings. I managed to duplicate only about 30% from a real Chinese painting.
