Brief: To produce an identity for an online exhibition called Composition for the Tate Liverpool website. This exhibition traces the collaborations between Visual Artists and Musicians.

 

 

The exhibition would follow the collaboration of Mogwai & Douglas Gordon in the creation of ‘Zidane: A 21st Century Portrait’. ‘Zidane: A 21st Century Portrait’ directed by Douglas Gordon, is a 90 minute video of footballer Zidane, following him through the Real Madrid vs Villarreal 2006 match. 17 cameras follow the footballer, giving the viewer an interesting insight into the game. The video is accompanied by a soundtrack composed by Mogwai; a lengthy guitar piece capturing the tense and sad mood of the game as events unfold and ending in Zidane being sent off.

 

The identity I have designed for this online exhibition focuses on capturing the movement of the video. The main identity image is a scan I have created of the video to create a distorted image of Zidane. This image reflects aspects of Mogwai’s music that often use digital distortion. 

The overlaid lettering on the poster spelling out ‘Zidane’ is used in the opening and closing of the film, linking the exhibition poster to the collaboration. For the typeface I have kept it similar to the typeface used in the video that is thin and crisp, that of which is also similar to the typeface used on Mogwai’s album cover ‘Hardcore will never die’.
