In the digital globalisation era, Chinese-speaking pop culture has never been so queered. In Mainland China, entertainment media products with explicit homosexual themes have long been banned from public screening. However, the contemporary media industry still strives to ride the wave of queer connotations and sentiments. Danmei耽美, a particularly influential genre of online writing (often by and for women) depicting homosexual fantasies, became more localised and mainstream when local media production companies purchased some original Danmei literature and adapted it into TV dramas. However, under the extensive censorship of queer content of the Chinese government, the most significant narrative change in adaptation is the transformation of homosexual relationships between men into fraternal bonds. This emerging genre of ‘Danmei adapted drama’耽改剧 has increased the sociocultural visibility and awareness of LGBTQ culture.
Homosexual narrativising seems to be a fun fantasy in queer culture fandom; however, it also plays with homosexual bans in China. On September 16, 2021, the State Administration of Radio and Television issued a document stressing the need to firmly resist the trend of Danmei Drama. This means that the homosexual fantasies of fans have begun to influence and even interfere with the established heterosexual norms of mainstream culture.
In response to this, ‘Fantasy as resistance’ 幻想作为抵抗 as a video-accompanied publication used the ‘encoding/decoding’ theory of Stuart Hall to express how producers disseminate the queer discourse on the series through encoding and how fans decode it to interpret every ‘normal’ interaction between the two characters and see the true love between them. The attempt to show homosexuality, even in the imagination of the fans, can serve as a power to counter the established heteronormative norms under the censorship of mainstream media and a burgeoning ‘queer pop’ scene in China.
