[en] I was commissioned to design the cover of Dom Pepo's second album. The album was conceived during the pandemic and the name Caos e Cura (chaos and healing) is a reference to cyclical processes of destruction and reconstruction, illness and healing. Several songs deal with themes in a cyclical way and the sound aesthetic of the record itself was a return of the band to its roots. With that in mind, I used the cycle idea recurrently on the cover: in the composition of the logo, in the looping animated gifs and in the circular arrangement of the elements.

O disco foi concebido durante a pandemia e o nome Caos e Cura é uma referência aos processos cíclicos de destruição e reconstrução, doença e cura. Várias músicas tratam de temas de forma cíclica e a própria sonoridade do disco foi um retorno da banda às suas raízes. Tendo isso em mente usei a ideia de ciclo de maneira recorrente na capa: na composição da logo, nos gifs animados em loop e na disposição circular dos elementos.

[en] Inspiration and process - The cover is divided into eight slices. Each slice contains a looping animation representing one of the songs on the disc. The idea of including an illustration and the title of each song on the cover was inspired by the cover of the Cheap Thrills album by Big Brother and the Holding Company (illustrated by Robert Crumb).

[en] The circular arrangement follows the graphic pattern used in the band's previous releases, such as the cover of the album "Escuridão já é luz suficiente" and the lo-fi single Cabelo.

[en] References - Some of the references were the cover of the album Grandeza, by Sessa, the cover of the album So Long, See You Tomorrow, by Bombay Bicycle Club, and the cover of the album Another Land, by Lucille Furs.

[en] Inspiration for the animations and layout came from the phenakistoscope, an ancient animation apparatus. The following examples belong to the Richard Balzer Collection. The first two were published in 1833, in England, by Thomas McLain, and the third is by unknown authorship.

[en] Spotify and Instagram - The looping animations and the circularity of the cover and title — without beginning or end — dialogue with the cycles and dualities contained both in the title "Caos & Cura" and in the lyrics of the songs. The cover animations were also adapted for promotion on instagram and for the cover of songs on Spotify.
