A WALK THOUGH THE PAST: Ajrakh print revival project

AJRAKH FUSTAT PRINT REVIVAL
IN COLLABORATION WITH "THE AJRAKH HOUSE"
DHAMADKA, KUTCH

PRINT 1
I first trace out the Rekh design precisely on the fragment. I traced it with white color on a black surface because that's how it will be made in the end. I later translated it into black on white for block-making purposes.
Trying to roughly make the repeat to figure out the basic unit and how it is repeated. This image shows that the primary team includes four prominent circular motifs with eight small irregular shapes surrounding each circle.
Figuring out what we do not have is one of the most critical steps to reconstruct a fragment.
The final draft of the basic unit was made by filling up the gap with designs from the second fragment.
More Refining
Separating the designs according to the colors to make the blocks in the order white, black and red. Blue will be obtained by dyeing.
PRINT 2
Visualizing the complete print with the help of photoshop
Sketching and trying different repeats
Final design refinement and coloring
Dividing the design into Blocks according to the colors in the order white and red.  Blue will be obtained by dyeing.
PRINT 3
Sketching the design: The design was intact and complete and thus there was more room for exploration. More detailing was done to the leaves.
Two version of color was made where first is the original color and second is in three colors.

PRINT 8
Figuring out the repeats and forms of the print with available fragments of the design by trying to repeat it digitally.
Drawing from the reference fragments to find all elements in the repeat. Similar designs are added to the empty spaces to fill the gaps.
Coloring for better understanding and then finding  the basic unit.
Refined design
