Many districts, neighbourhoods or suburbs become dead and abandoned, so-called bedrooms or concrete deserts. Alienation of people living in cities or megapolis is becoming a huge problem more and more often. How to protect cities from communities disappearing and what would happen if we let residents design their districts? Two students share their ideas for a sustainable model of urban development and thriving neighborhoods in their project Green Lab, winner of the international competition C40 Students Reinventing Cities in Reykjavik. They addressed the ghetto stigma problem of Breiðholt district in Reykjavik and proposed solutions concentrated around social relations and potential users, starting from neighbors to tourists. They pay special attention to the context of the place, functionality and aesthetics, and at the same time focus on the people’s needs and respect for the natural environment. Through this talk, they want to bring closer topics of community involvement, the importance of local activities and innovative solutions in participatory urban planning.
