Pattern Recognition

Short project to create a cover, title page and frontispiece for the book Pattern Recognition by William Gibson. For this cover I focused in on the definition of pattern recognition – finding meaning in meaningless or random data. To achieve this I wanted to create the text out of something, which made it look as if it appeared by chance or is a creation of the mind. I used ants for two reasons, firstly because of the name of the agency the main character was working for “Blue Ant” and secondly because the book was about brands and marketing and ants follow the crowd and swarm areas. The colour stock I chose to print on was a dull grey to represent the absence of brands because of the main characters dislike of them. For the frontispiece I continued the ant theme using one large blue ant, a visual representation of the company “Blue Ant” which gives more meaning to the cover and represents the imposing power of marketing. The text on the opposite page is very simply laid out very small, simply and subtly to give the ant dominance on the page. When choosing the typeface I wanted something that would look modern and relate to technology. The typeface chosen to build up out of ants had to be very simple and geometric to remain legible.
