In Sicilia, per la precisione a Palermo, c'è una tradizione che perdura da anni. Il 13 dicembre, il giorno di Santa Lucia che secondo la leggenda pose fine alla carestia, si mangiano solo arancinə. Proprio in questo giorno, dunque, non si fa attenzione a grassi e carboidrati e si festeggia mangiando queste sfere di riso con svariati ripieni. 

Esiste una contesa tra Palermo e Catania su come si pronunci il nome di questo piatto tradizionale. Nella parte occidentale dell'isola l'arancina è femmina perché la sua forma è da ricollegare alla forma del frutto dell'arancia. Nel versante orientale invece si dice arancino, al maschile, perché nel dialetto siciliano il piatto viene detto arancinu.

Su questa diatriba è addirittura intervenuta l'Accademia della Crusca che si è pronunciata dicendo:

Essendo siciliana, del team dell'arancina fimmina, ho sviluppato questa semplice rappresentazione grafica di questo timballo di riso e come dice la frase:

"The tasty Sicilian rice timbale owes its name to the analogy with the round and golden fruit of the orange, that is the orange, so it could be concluded that the correct gender is the female one: arancina."
