04. Visual Metaphor

Approach: Carmen is an Opera which tells of the downfall of Don José, set is southern Spain. He falls for Carmen, abandoning his childhood sweetheart and military duties, only for Carmen to leave him for the torero Escamillo. In a jealous rage, José stabs her, killing her. Imagery I used includes a flower Carmen gives to José in the first act, which I portray as a rose for the language of love, and for the red color which represents blood in the final poster. Where she is stabbed, the flower blooms, petals falling to resemble both the loss of love, and blood loss. In one iteration of the poster use the image of a bull's silhouette as metaphor for Carmen leaving José for the torero Escamillo.
