Landscape in motion

This work was created for the exhibition ‘Landscape in Processing’ at The State Tretyakov Gallery (Russia, Moscow) and refers to the work of the Russian artist Ivan Chuikov ‘Panorama-2’ (1976), which is in the main exhibition.

This story is about the extension of space as well as the possibility and impossibility of measuring it. In Ivan Chuikov's work ‘Panorama-2’ the space is fragmentized and focused on itself, something limitless is narrowed down to a formula or an object, encoding its formula. An artist achieves variability of the landscape with its complete permanence. In my work the painted wooden figures are placed on rotating axes, similar to praying wheels in a Buddhist temples. In a certain position on a cross sections of figures the landscape drawn by ballpoint pen is appearing. You can swipe your hand over the object and the image will disappear turning into the pile of colored shapes. Viewers can rotate fragments, they could see and put flats together into one image but in fact, nothing would change – the landscape would still be composed from pine tree shapes, mushrooms, domes and unidentified banister shapes.

Эта работа была создана для выставки «Пейзаж в переработке» в Государственной Третьяковской галерее и отсылает к работе русского художника Ивана Чуйкова «Panoram-2» (1976), которая находится в основной экспозиции.

Это история, про протяженность пространства, возможность и невозможность его измерения. У Ивана Чуйкова, в работе «Панорама-2», пространство фрагментировано и зациклено само на себе, нечто беспредельное сведено до своей формулы и объекта, кодирующего эту формулу. Художник разрабатывает тему вариативности пейзажа при его полной неизменности. В моей работе зрители могут вращать деревянные фигуры, размещенные на осях, подобно молитвенным барабанам в буддийских храмах. В отдельных местах на поперечных срезах фигур шариковой ручкой изображены фрагменты абстрактного пейзажа. Фигуры можно расположить фронтально, тогда этот пейзаж сложится в единое изображение, а можно просто провести рукой по фигурам, — в любом случае, пейзаж будет образовываться из форм елок, грибов, куполов и прочих балясинных форм.
