ΣΠΟΝΔΉ (SPONDE)

ΣΠΟΝΔΉ (SPONDE) was created as an attempt to pull back the covers on how I see the world and to create a visual interpretation of my identity. With only fifty copies made, interaction was key. Scratch panels, mirrored text, keyhole windows, and gold leaf helped to ensure the zine was not an ‘open and read’ experience, but an ‘open and explore’ one.

In a re-enactment of the release of my thoughts and feelings, each copy of ΣΠΟΝΔΉ was duplicated (photocopied) from a master copy. These photocopies were then individually embellished by hand to not only create an interactive element, but also to take the reader on a journey into my world if only for a brief moment.

Σπονδή / Sponde / Libation
an act of pouring a liquid as a sacrifice/or in honor.
also known as Jupiter XXXVI, a natural satellite of Jupiter.
Red wine adorns the front and back cover as a literal representation of the zine’s name. The act of ΣΠΟΝΔΉ  in this case being dedicated to several endings in my life at the time of print.
On the title and another subsequent page, appears a single sheet of gold leaf. Upon opening, the fragile sheet begins to tear, leading the reader’s curiosity, and their human nature to touch, to take over.
As they wipe away the gold, the title page reveals the zine’s name and issue number. The subsequent page’s gold leaf reveals a photo of the moon, something I have always admired.
On another page the reader is met with a repetitive pattern of Greek text. A small arrow invites them to scratch away a panel with the translation of the surrounding text found underneath.

Intimate thoughts and explanations are presented in a way that still preserve some sort of privacy. Treatments of distortion, reflection and linear expansion are applied to various portions of text masking them with varying levels of decipher-ability.

Various other elements are presented which may or may not make sense to the reader. Absolute comprehension is not the goal with this publication, rather it is hoped that through exploring the zine the reader would be guided to a place where they would consider the little quirks that exist in their view of
the world, whilst also discovering some knowledge about me, my style, and my way of viewing the world
along the way.
