신경쓰지 않았지만 생각해보면 행복이란 크건 작건 어디에나 존재한다. 오랜 친구를 만날 때, 애인과 데이트를 할 때 그리고 부모님에게 첫 용돈을 드렸을 때처럼 우리에겐 그 순간들이 모두 크고 작은 행복의 순간이다. 우리 모두에게는 단순히 흘러가도록 두고 싶지 않은, 영원히 추억하고 싶은 것들이 존재한다. 그런 기분이 드는 순간이 우리가 말하는 행복이 아닐까.
요즘 가끔 나의 부모님은 잔뜩 설레이는 표정을 하곤 우리의 어릴 적 모습이 담긴 사진첩과 비디오를 함께 보자며 다가와 말씀하시곤 한다. 항상 그럴 때 마다 “이 때 참 행복했지, 지금도 물론 행복하지”라는 말을 하시곤 행복한 표정으로 추억에 잠기시곤 한다. 과연 어떤 매개체가 이보다 우리의 행복했던 순간을 기억할 수 있게끔 만들어주고 그 순간의 향수를 불러일으킬 수 있을까. 오래되고 빛 바랜 한 장의 사진이 주는 아련한 기억 그리고 소중한 감정은 대체불가능한 매개체가 아닐까.
그래서인지 오늘날 스마트폰의 카메라 기능은 나날이 발전했고, SNS와 같은 소셜네트워크로 인해 사람들에게 스마트폰에서의 카메라 기능은 일상에서 없어서는 안되는 기능이 되었다. 그만큼 편해진 사진촬영 덕분에 스마트폰 앨범엔 수많은 사진이 쌓이고 우리의 일상은 촘촘히 기록될 수 있게 되었다. 하지만 한 편으로는 사진의 무게는 점점 더 가벼워지고 있다는 생각이 들기도 한다. 행복한 순간을 포착하는 것이 아니라 다른 사람들에게 행복해 보이기 위한 사진들로 가득 쌓여가고 뒤돌아 봤을 때 기억이 나지 않는 무의미한 사진들도 가득히 보였다.
그런 점에서 즉석 카메라가 가지고 있는 매력은 무궁무진하다고 생각했다. 스마트폰 카메라가 기능적으로 발전해도 여전히 여행을 떠나는 우리의 가방 한켠에 항상 자리잡고 존재 자체로만으로도 설레이는 마음을 선물해주는 제품이 아닐까. 나는 이런 즉석 카메라가 가지고 있는 본연의 매력에 다양한 사용성을 더해서 사진을 찍는 사람에게 즐거움과 재미를 선물하고 싶었다. 꽤나 제한적인 촬영셋팅을 가지고 있는 즉석카메라에 ‘모듈’이라는 방식을 적용해 확장성을 부여함과 동시에 사용자가 원하는 사진을 다양한 렌즈나 악세서리들을 통해서 만들어갈 수 있을 것이라고 생각한다.
I didn't care, but when I think about it, happiness exists everywhere, big or small. For us, those moments are all moments of happiness, big and small, like when we meet a friend we have known for a long time, when we go on a date with our lover, and when we give our parents the first gift I bought with the money I earned. We all have things we don't want to simply let go, things we want to remember forever. Maybe the moment we feel that way is the happiness we speak of.
These days, sometimes my parents come up to me with excited expressions on their faces and say that they want to see a photo album and video of our childhood together. Whenever this happens, my parents say, “I was really happy at that time, and of course I’m happy now too,” and they often fall into memories with a happy expression on their faces. What medium can make our happy moments more memorable and evoke nostalgia for those moments? Aren't the vague memories and precious emotions of an old, faded photograph an irreplaceable medium?
Perhaps that's why the camera function of today's smartphones has developed day by day, and due to social networks such as SNS, the camera function of the smartphone has become an indispensable function for people in their daily life. Thanks to the ease of photography, a lot of photos are piled up in smartphone albums, and our daily lives can be closely recorded. But on the other hand, I sometimes feel that the weight of the photos is getting lighter. Instead of capturing happy moments, the photos were piled up to show false happiness to others.
In that regard, I thought that the charm of an instant camera is limitless. Even if the smartphone camera develops functionally, the instant camera is still a product that always sits in the corner of our bag when we go on a trip, and it is a product that gives us a thrilling heart just by being there. I wanted to present pleasure and fun to people taking pictures by adding various usability to the intrinsic charm of this instant camera. I think that the ‘module’ method is applied to the instant camera, which has quite limited shooting settings, to give expandability and at the same time allow users to create the photos they want through various lenses and accessories.
