A few days ago, a book came out which I will always remember for what it represents. I had the enigmatic privilege of illustrating one of Haruki Murakami's most beloved works, Kafka on the Shore. It was delicately crafted through the fine prism of a @foliosociety edition in London, renowned for the recurrent fascination it leaves in its readers whenever they drop into the world an illustrated edition of a beautiful literature classic. These are amazing collector's editions that remind the reader how books can be an artistic object that drastically contributes to the pleasure of reading.
Similar to the story behind the book, a magical sign that conspired to unwind the beginning of this project, was that after a process in which I presented some proposals, Murakami was the one who chose my work to accompany his work. Such a beautiful honor to learn this news. Wow. I am grateful for this opportunity to one of my favorite writers.
This project came a little over a year ago, a place and time in the world where I wanted to be changing my line of work and way of thinking. Murakami is a writer who loosely evokes ethereal places full of abstract pleasures and and a handful list of colorful notes for each type of pain you feel when you’re in love, just like a cloud that can be felt with your cheeks. And at that moment it seemed ideal to combine his enveloping lightness with the style I was developing by then: a more formally abstract and playful visual narrative, comic panels of lines and spots, similar to my gravity book or my little project of substantial comics.
In the end, it seems to me that such direction blended well with Murakami's bewitching pulse. You can judge for yourself, I’ll leave a purchase link in my stories and bio. I will post more details in coming occasions.
