AUTHORIAL PRACTICE
This authorial practice project consists of a series of three illustrated children’s books for the South African School Psychologist Association (SASPA) serves as the client leading to the books being published into primary schools. Children together with their peers ages 6-8 notice differences in other people and then tend to ask questions. The intended target audience refers to an age group where identity plays a big role within the aspect of identity development let alone acceptance from peers. The idea is to partner up with SASPA (South African School Psychologists Association) who specifically focus on children’s health and wellbeing. The concept of this project centres around how humans behave towards structuring a family in comparison with animals. In this case, there are be made use of the three main diverse family structures; homosexual, adoptive and multi-racial compared to animals performing similar scenarios.
Picture book 1
Themba and His two Daddies are giraffe characters representing the Queer community, as secondary research states that 90% of giraffes appear to be homosexual which relates with single-gender families.
Picture book 2
Emma Feels Different is based on the idea of orphanage. Rabbit characters adopting a kitten reflects the concept of animals orphaning baby animals out of natural instinct.
