Graphic Days® Neologia

Neologia
A window dedicated to projects carried out by young Italian designers under 30, innovative, experimental and characterized by stylistic and language contamination. The exhibition is the result of a call conceived by Graphic Days® which has selected 100 works within 4 catagories: Motion Graphic, Poster Design, Editorial Design and GIF. The project Neologia is aimed at the enhancement of young Italian talents in the world of visual design today, creating a network in the panorama of visual culture in Italy and promoting new language and experiments in visual communication.
Open Call
It was decided not to impose a theme on which to carry out the project to be nominated, but rather to leave the interpretation of the terms "experimentation" and "contamination of languages" totally open, maintaining as the sole aim that of finding innovative, original projects characterised by experimentation, both at a theoretical and formal level.
The competition was created to give space to all deserving projects, developed by young students or professionals and, for this reason, it was decided to give the possibility to apply for a work previously developed, without imposing the obligation to participate with an unpublished project. In this sense, the doors were also open to all those personal, university or simply challenge works that led to the experimentation of new techniques or disciplines.
Manifesto
1. CELEBRATION
One of the main objectives is to identify the possible new directions that Italian graphics are taking. It is an analysis of how certain impulses, sometimes external to the world of design, can flow into new forms and expressions and how young designers are using graphics and related disciplines to reinterpret them in an innovative way.

2. COMMUNITY
The call is aimed at giving young designers the opportunity to show their projects and skills to an international and constantly evolving community; at the same time, it allows them to become part of it, expanding their knowledge and touching what it means to interface and interact with a community of artists. This is strongly enhanced by the environment in which Neologia was born: Graphic Days® is set in an artistic and community context that allows the project to find greater application.

3. DEMOCRACY
Neologia is configured as a democratic environment, characterised by an inclusive and egalitarian outlook, which without limits of language and experimentation brings together the best visual design projects of young Italian talents.
The concept of "Italianness", which is intended to underline the importance of the ties that are created with the territory and culture, regardless of one's origin and nationality, reflects the open and dynamic vision that the project aims to promote. For this reason, both those who were born in Italy and those who have lived for at least two years in Italy, relating to the society and the territory, can participate in the call.

4. QUALITY AND EXPERIMENTATION
The call aims to reward the quality and experimentation that characterises the work of young creatives. The selection process has been carried out with a focus on the innovation of languages, the freshness of expression and the use of digital techniques, which are having an increasingly profound and incisive influence on graphic design.

5. SPRINGBOARD
Neologia aims to create a showcase space for the exchange of knowledge and skills, dedicated to all young Italian talents who need a springboard into today's world of visual design.
It is therefore an excellent "business card" for presenting oneself and one's projects to an external commission and to a new artistic panorama.

6. OBSERVATORY
The final output consisted first of all of a physical observatory, that is the exhibition held in the sixth edition of Graphic Days® Touch designed to collect the 100 projects selected by the internal jury, but also of a virtual observatory available on the Neologia website. The latter is configured as a platform that allows users to be constantly updated with the latest news from the world of visual communication.
Editorial
Editorial projects of all kinds, such as fanzines, magazines, books or thesis projects. Applicants sent the complete project file and 5 still life photos illustrating the editorial with a focus on the cover and packaging (if provided) and 5 photos of significant layouts within it. The images aim to contextualise the project and were taken into consideration by the jury since, in the event of selection, they would have been published on the official Neologia Graphic Days®.
For this category in particular, the projects were placed on a table during the exhibition so that visitors could browse through the projects and touch the complexity of the works presented in the exhibition.
Poster
The Poster Design projects presented in the exhibition were of two different sizes: 50x70 cm and 70x100 cm and placed on their display in staggered order, and some of them were overhanging, so as to recreate a fluid, moving arrangement in line with the concept of evolution and change pursued by the call. The posters could be nominated whether created using digital or analogue techniques.
GIF
A GIF is defined as a graphic, looped, soundless work of between 5 and 10 seconds duration. A high degree of originality and quality of content was required for this category. During the exhibition the projects were displayed on a large vertical screen and shown one after the other.
Motion Graphics
Motion Graphics projects of any kind, such as animated typography, stop motion, flat motion, 2D animation or 3D animation. The required formats are 1920 x 1080 pixels (16:9), 1080 x 1080 pixels or 1024 x 768 pixels (4:3). The duration of the file should be between 15 seconds and 1 minute. Because of the duration of each project on display, which could be up to one minute, the projects were divided into several screens. The five screens are positioned one after the other, in order to make the exhibition fluid and dynamic. The impossibility, caused by the pandemic, of using individual devices, such as earphones, to listen to the videos, led to the decision to cover the structure on the sides with black sheets to absorb the sound of the different videos.
