Alvar Aalto Library

The world-famous library of Alvaro Aalto in Vyborg. The building is considered a milestone in the history of modern architecture. It was here that the unique feature of his architectural style first manifested itself - a combination of the severity of functionalism and the gentle smoothness of natural lines.
The construction of the library began in 1927 with funds bequeathed by the widow of the Vyborg philanthropist Juho Lallucca, a wealthy city dweller Maria Lallucca. On October 13, 1935, its grand opening took place. The library soon became known throughout the world as a model library building.
The library existed in its original form until 1939. In 1944, Vyborg again became part of the Soviet Union, and the library was abandoned for a long time. In order for local residents to be able to use the services of the library again, its reconstruction was required, the money for which appeared only in 1954, restoration work was carried out in the library. But the lack of original drawings and necessary materials among the restorers did not allow the restoration of this building in its original form. In 1961, the library reopened to the public.
The Finnish Committee for the Restoration of the Vyborg Library, created in 1992, brought the issue of restoration of the monument to the international level. In October 2013, the second (final) stage of restoration was completed, and in November 2013 the library was inaugurated.
