Jan Tschichold + Hierarchy

This project was to create a series of book jackets showing understanding of typographic hierarchy. Our subject was graphic designer Jan Tschichold. We were only able to use specific typefaces along with two PMS colors and white. I used black in all my designs, paired with one pantone and the use of white. I can say that I focused on Tschichold's bold and artful methods while adding my own design style.

I designed this cover with the hierarchy focusing on master and Jan Tschicold and typographer tucked around it. I also wanted to highlight the spine and make a letter mark for the back cover. I paired Sabon, a serif and Din, a sans-serif with this cover which complement each other.
I designed this cover to have the hierarchy focus on the large scale type that fills the front cover. I played with the transparency so it doesn't take away from his name which I highlighted using a color block. You can also see a nice contrast between the lower case and capital letters in his name on the front cover. I continued the letter mark I used on the first design and used it on the spine. I also continued the transparency and large scale effect to the back cover with the authors, editor and publisher. The typefaces used on this design were Sabon, a serif and Din, a sans-serif.
With this design, I wanted to try to capture Tschichold's Bauhaus style. I paired Bodoni, a serif and Futura, a san-serif together. I italicized the sans-serif to encapsulate the shapes I used within the design. I also placed Master Typographer on a diagonal axis, which Tschichold used as one of his  signature designs along with geometrical elements.
