Project: Papertoy
For this school project we had to make a papertoy. A papertoy is, essentially, a toy made out of paper that can be in any shape and form. This project shows my progress of how I made my papertoy.
For the first part of my project our teacher suggested us to create something of which you're interested in. Since I like music, I used that as my inspiration source. I thought about a music store with a funky character as a mascot, especially since the target audience is "adolescent". Here are a few sketches of the mascot:
I decided to change my style along the way because I wasn't satisfied with how the first concept looked like. So after I drew my mascot with a new style, I decided to go with the second design. I continued by creating logo concepts as that was also a part of the assignment. Here are a few sketches of my logo concept:
The two first logo's looked a little lazy to be the "main logo" for a music store. However, they could work for a small label on a product or just a sticker. But since I was looking for a design that would fit a hyped and funky music store, so I decided to use the second graffiti design as the words "Replay" and "Records" kinda overlapped each other a little. So eventually, this became the official design:
After finishing the sketch and the line art, I gave my mascot some colors and played around with the gradient tool to get different colors on my character. Here are a few examples (the top one is the original design):
The original design of my mascot with my first-choice colors.
The final image is also the design and color scheme I went with. I was satisfied with the color scheme because I like how there are cool colors, despite them being vibrant. Luckily they colors aren't too flashy or too calm that it could be disturbing to the eye.
After designing my mascot, I decided to create the model for my paper cutouts. I used Blender3D to make a block out of my mascot because it's easier and less time consuming then drawing your entire cutout. Here are a few screenshots of the model:
Later in the process I decided to change the head of my mascot. I changed it after I tried to make the papercut out for my character. I still wanted try and see if I could use the original idea (the one with the oval-shaped head) for my paper cut out, but unfortunately it didn't go as planned. In the end, I redesigned the head by turning it into a cube so it would be easier for me to make my paper cutouts. You can probably see why in these screenshots below:
Unfortunately, I forgot to make screenshots of the previous model's cutout. But this is essentially how it looks like before it's printed. The first time I printed the cut out, it was too small so I had to re-scale the cutout, increase the size, and then ask the printshop to print it out for me again in hopes that the papertoy come out bigger.
