Versailles
For this piece I based it off of Fourth of July, by Sufjan Stevens. When I was listening to the song I had an idea of what to do and sketched it out on different layers, using Procreate.
Once I had the sketch I selected one layer and colored it one color. While the base color was still selected I used a brush to add different strokes of different shades. This gave the base color more dimension. I wanted this piece's objects to look like a painting so the individual, layered strokes helped with that effect.
Once I had the hands done I individually selected the dove sketch and repeated the individual strokes on the dove's base color on the layer below the sketch. once I had the basic shading of the dove I used the Hue and Saturation tool to lighten the dove. I then went back and drew on the beak and added shading to the beak's base color.
When I had the two main objects colored I used another layer to paint on the tears. and added a burnt effect to the end of the dove's body.
once I had the basic coloring done, I went back and on a new layer and layered different colored of warm colors to make a fire base. I then used the smudge brush to get the hue of the fire. I then added little ashes flying away from the bird, and shaded those pieces.
I then repeated the painting process with the base color of the heart.
I changed the color of the background and used a charcoal brush, enlarged it, and added texture to the background so that it would look like old paper. I wanted the old paper effect because the other part of the lyrics I chose not to include were, "And I'm sorry I left, but it was for the best, Though it never felt right, My little Versailles."
I then duplicated the hands, used alpha lock to only color on one object, adjusted the gaussian blur, and changed the angle to get a shadow effect.
I then added the song lyrics and changed the lighting to darken to get the effect of the letters on the piece.
And then I was done.
