WHY?
Hi! My name is Lillian, and today I'm going to show you my progress of my papertoy I made. I made this for my illustration class. The goal of this project is to learn how to make from a concept sketch a real figure. The name actually says it already "make a papertoy". This includes making sketches, choosing a final concept design and then finishing the product.
My idea
My idea for this project was to make a toy for kids. Something cute, something 'hero-ish', something that would scream "oh my god, I want it". That's why I decided to make a "Space cat". A cat with a space suit on. The cat would be from an imaginable kids tv show, going on adventures in space, saving the world. It's quite original.
Step one: Sketch
I quickly had an idea for this project: a space cat! I drew one on my "Meet the artist" page as one of my "emoticons". I thought it was a fun idea because it could be a cool toy for kids to play with. I wanted to make it simple and fun. Here are my sketches.
Logo sketches
I also made some sketches for my logo for my imaginary toy business. I wanted to make something with space vibes, very shiny with some iconic letters.
Step two: colors
After making a clean papertoy front view, I started choosing the colors. I couldn't choose at first, because I had no idea what type of color I wanted. The background really helped me to choose a color because I didn't want the papertoy to blend in with the background. I really like the last color design, so I choose that design. I also finished the complete logo.
Step three: making a layout
I think the hardest part of making this papertoy was to make a layout. I hated this part because I don't like to craft and put things together, it's not really my thing. Anyways, here's the layout I made.
The papertoy
Sadly, I really suck at crafting like I said before. So this is the best I could.
Feedback from my teacher
Evalutation
I agree with the feedback and I'm also happy with the feedback. I already knew that the final product wasn't going to look good, so I focused more on the sketches, the concept, the colors etc. Maybe if I did make the layout and the final papertoy a big bigger than it would've been easier for me. I was really struggling with the papertoy itself. But even though that didn't work out, I'm happy with the design! I learned how to make a layout for a papertoy, I learned how to work with different shapes, and I learned how to make a final desicion for the colors.
Thank you for reading!
