Digital Real-Estate: Privatizing Ownership

Dependency on the digital infrastructures is exponential as society utilizes digital data as means of entertainment and work embedded within our daily routines. The coexistence of both physical and the digital realms is intertwined as technology advances leading to question whether society could exist with one or the other. The finite geography of the physical world leads to the shift towards digital medium as even ownership and access now coexist in the metaverse. In fact, contemporary ownership has become restricted due to the integration of digital systems, enabling a small group of people to dictate the social and economical hierarchies. However, with blockchain, people are given the newly gained access to free ownership of physical or digital assets through cryptocurrency; thereby breaking the standardized rules applied in the physical world. In fact, ownership is freely controlled by the owner without having to progress through the established systems of background and income checks. To even further extend this privatized ownership, one could push forward owning the impossible, whether or not it exists within the physical reality.

Digital Real-Estate contradicts the traditional conventions of land ownership in the physical realm. With the real-estate market being the most profitable in the 21st century, ownership is more valued whether one lives in the physical space or not. By marketing physical properties in the digital realm, the range of available land spaces becomes endless. Digital ownership with  the absence of access to physical space could widen the market from farmland to skyscrapers to outer space. By having people live in the metaverse, the personalization is also endless as the land exists outside the laws of physics as well as governmental and environmental restrictions. Landmarks have been symbols for tourist destinations, promoting and celebrating historical milestones of the country and its inhabitants. Yet, ownership is reserved to the state, thereby controlled by the authorities to promote its significance. With access to digital ownership and blockchain, the ownership rights can be privatized, thereby enabling people to own minted NFTs of the landmarks around the world. Each item will be exclusive for buyers with limited editions with priorities reserved for the locals in the area. The value of each ownership certificate is authenticated by the country and is given rating and value depending on the history and importance of the landmark.
