Packaging Design: Lakeside Pork

My project began with a visit to a local mom and pop market. I located the darkest corner of the dustiest bottom shelf and retrieved a can of "Lakeside Pork."
My initial research revealed that Lakeside Foods, established in 1887, had several product lines, which emphasize premium quality. This pork product was designated only for food distribution programs. This fact inspired me to create a package design that appeared less industrial and more appetizing through copy, typography and visual realignment of the product contained within the packaging.

My thought was to develop new package designs (options for a can, pouch and box) to convey care, compassion and innovation. This company isn't just providing meat in a can for food distribution. This new brand perception can reinvigorate the product. Perhaps it can reshape the minds of the marketing department inciting an effort to reposition the product for broader market expansion.

Here are some of my inspirational images that started me thinking about a better redesign:
I began sketching out some of my ideas:
The next step was to begin the label design to adhere to the new packaging concepts. These are some of the options I came up with that included a repositioned picture of a pig, highlighting when the company began and the significance of quality, new colors, new typography, adding recipes and nutrition facts:
Then I moved on to the packaging ideas. Vacuum sealed pouches, cans, and boxes. I turned one can over to display an eye catching silhouette of the pig on the top of the can. I continued refining subtle features within the design. It was very helpful receiving feedback from the class. Here were some of my drafts in Dimension:
Which brought me to my final design shoot:
