Umcimbi Craft Beer for Women

Umcimbi 🛖

The name is taken from a Zulu word meaning 'celebration' 🍻. This is fitting, as the craft beer itself is meant to be enjoyed on special occasions.

Craft beverages are often seen as high end and usually in the hands of a select few, however I believe that there is a way to make craft beverages more accessible to everyone. The idea behind this concept is to create a brand that is also inclusive and accessible. The brand aims to demystify beer as a man’s drink, and break down the perceived barrier of entry for women.

The tradition of brewing beer in South Africa dates back centuries, and was reserved for women. Today, South African women are busier than they ever were before as the world has become increasingly westernised. The modern women does not have time to brew beer from scratch. In a full-circle phenomenon, Umcimbi affords them the opportunity to indulge in a beer that they have worked laboriously to make. With the introduction of Umcimbi, South African women can now fulfil their desire to enjoy homemade beer in the comfort of their homes.

This traditional sorghum craft beer which is traditionally served at special occasions and ceremonies aims to celebrate, empower and uplift women 🤝. A beer that helps women reclaim their history as brewsters and beer lovers. Visually the brand incorporates
illustrations to give the brand a softer, handmade feel, and a South African woman was chosen to represent that the beer is made locally. With images of calabashes, gourds 🧉, villages & huts 🛖 and women👳🏾‍♀️.
