I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings

NIKOLA GROZDANOV
“I KNOW WHY THE CAGED BIRD SINGS”

For the installation, Nikola Grozdanov has borrowed its title, I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings, from an autobiography by the poet Maya Angelou. The installation consists of ten footprints made of glass, all arranged as traces left by a collective image of us all. With this series of works, Grozdanov sheds light on an issue that affects the everyday life of specific individuals or social groups, dealing with the duality of the discriminator and discriminated, the suppressor and suppressed. Behind each of the ten steps, a person has unveiled a fragment of him or herself. The transparency of the glass material allows the audience to catch a glimpse of what has been unveiled - a fragile moment additionally enhanced by the fragility of the glass.
