WAYFINDING | SPACIAL DESIGN

BRIEF

Wayfinding has proven itself to be the most fundamental example of the integration of meaning and information in design. This extremely interesting field of study was exposed to me through the ILL 300.3 project which required the student to create a way finding system for the JAVETT-UP art centre located near the University of Pretoria. This center, hosting different exhibitions and South African artworks, was in desperate need of a way finding system that would honour the style of brutalism of the different galleries, whilst not distracting form the pieces of art the centre is hosting at the time. This challenge incorporated a lot of conceptual and inspirational thinking, and after consideration, I decided to mould all of my designs around the physical architecture of the art centre itself in order to effectively reflect its identity and identifying features that make it a piece of art in and of itself. One of these key feature which serves as the main theme for all of the required deliverables are the casted shadows created by the bridge gallery specifically. The hurdle of not distracting the onlooker was made easy to overcome, for by reflecting the art museums own style, the way finding system blends into its environment enough as not to grab to much attention away from the intended target of focus.

LOGO-MARKS FOR GALLERY SPACES

This deliverable required me to create branding marks for six of the twelve gallery spaces. These identifying marks are applied to signage so that visitors to the gallery would be able to orient themselves quickly between different floors, galleries and spaces. By using form that mimics the shadows casted by the bridge gallery in specific, I was able to create unique, yet simple designs for each of the most important, identified spaces.
The logo marks are applied to sand blasted glass and then mounted to the wall of its corresponding gallery. The sandblasted glass creates shadows with the marks on them, reflecting the theme of casting shadows created by the art center's architecture.

FOLLOWING THE SHAPES

Creating the circulatory mapping for the JAVETTE-UP centre was no small feat. The three levelled center with twenty four unique and telling labels. By applying the created colour palette which embodies the african backdrop of the art center and varying the value of each colour, hierarchy and visual intrest is created to effectively communicate position, flow and interconnection between different spaces. This circulatory map is applied to a freestanding structure as exterior identification signages.

INFORMATION SIGNAGE

Information signage elements where designed according to some very specific parameters. They where required to host information about opening and closing times, public holidays, fees, regulatory icons and a fifty word short rationale on the art center's identity. The result of these specs are the designs that will follow. They are also mounted on sand blasted glass to create consistence between all of the different signage systems within the gallery.
BROCHURE

The brochure is handed out or bought at the information counter or entrance of the art center. They serve as an opportunity to inform the visitor on the different exhibitions that are currently on show at the JAVETTE-UP center whilst serving the primary purpose of hosting the circulatory map. This is done to give the visitor quick access to knowing where they are and how to get to their next chosen location.
