“As a continuing series we are inviting designers and visual artists from around the world to contribute designs for our courtyard billboard. No creative restrictions – simply a format and a typeface. Marina's billboard is using Royal Theatre Serif to construct visual imagery across the billboard. With her Cyrillic knowledge, the typeface is put to good use with a contemporary twist.”
Auditions, rehearsals, scripts, stage fright, comedy, tragedy, drama, suspense, dialogue, monologue, improvisation, orchestra, ballet, pantomime, red curtains… There’s all of that and more, but the only thing that really matters in the end is the audience’s reaction – be it disapproving booing accompanied by tomatoes, or loud applause, standing ovation, cheering and roses. In this type play I wanted to capture the theatrical exaggeration of stretched opera vocals and Shakespearean acting, while focusing on the opposite ends of the emotional spectrum of an audience that shows their (dis)approval by throwing things on stage.
