Retro is all the rage these days. Our minds look back with fond memories of times gone by and our nostalgic hearts yearn for the things that once held so much meaning to us. In 2019 Stephen Jones, Director and Developer of Checkmate A1500 Plus, launched a Kickstarter to make something that inspired him when he was younger. A Back to the Future style hoverboard? How about one of those Proton Packs from Ghostbusters? No, for Stephen it was the 1985 Amiga 1000 personal computer. However, he didn't simply want to bring back this classic piece of retro-tech, he wanted to re-imagine the iconic look of the Amiga and design a computer case that could fit inside all of the modern hardware we enjoy today.

Following on from the success of the first Kickstarter project, Stephen was inspired to do another one, this time turning his attention to the mini ITX form factor. He also wanted a complete overhaul of the packaging design and needed something that had a retro aesthetic but also felt modern, much like the case itself. In addition, he required a series of promotional videos, to pay homage to the tech that inspired so many during the 1980s, and to show off his new product that he wanted to bring to market. This second Kickstarter was a tremendous success and generated over £14,000 above its £50,000 target.
