⠀THE ORIGIN OF BARONG LANDUNG

In the 12th century, the king of Balingkang, King Sri Jaya Pangus, married Queen Kang Ching Wie who came from the lands of China. During his reign, Bali thrived and had a very prosperous life. The only problem was that the pair never got blessed with any offspring, thus the king decided to set off to meditate at Mount Batur. There he met the lake goddess, Dewi Danu, fell in love, and had a son together named Mayadenawa.

Being aware that Jaya Pangus hadn’t returned for a long time, Kang Ching Wie went to search for her husband and met a kid who turned out to be the result of the affair. Dewi Danu was not less distraught. A war inflicted and the goddess was infuriated. In the end, Jaya Pangus decided to protect Kang Ching Wie as his love for the empress never died. In rage for being cheated, Dewi Danu cursed the two into statues. The kingdom grieved greatly upon the loss of their beloved rulers. Seeing this situation, Dewi Danu realized her mistake and went there with the son of Jaya Pangus. The kingdom then decided to take him as the successor. They built a pair of dolls to commemorate the couple’s eternal love called ‘Barong Landung’.
BALI AGUNG SHOW by Bali Safari & Marine Park
is a one-hour theater adaptation that highlights the rich culture and traditions of Bali. An extravagant, world-class show with 150 Balinese dancers, as well as musicians, shadow-puppet masters, and an array of exotic animals. I watched this in 2011 but the fascination remains until now, therefore I’ll be using this as my main reference
