Bauhaus Comparative Analysis

Bauhaus

The Bauhaus movement was founded in Weimar, Germany in the year 1919. German architect Walter Gropius founded the Staatliche’s Bauhaus art and design school. (vectornator, 2021) Essentially, the Bauhaus movement was a movement born out of the modernist culture as Walter Gropius was inspired by the art of William Morris’s (arts and craft movement artist) and Frank Lloyd Wright (expressionist movement artist) and sought to bring artist and designers together for the sake of creating a brighter future. (vectornator, 2021) (history, 2017)
Bauhaus aimed to infuse fine art and functional design thus making practical works which are aesthetically pleasing to the soul. Bauhaus is characterized by its harmonious equilibrium of geometric shapes whilst solidly maintaining an emphasis on simplicity and function. (vectornator, 2021) (Richman, 2021)

The above Bauhaus movement architectural design was created in 1925 by Walter Gropius. It is a simple design(as there are no elaborate or intricate features), all of its incorporated design elements are practical. The building is designed using geometric forms which are well balanced with one another. Gropius’s design’s clear and deliberate use of simple yet harmonious geometric shapes(in adherence to Bauhaus movement characteristics and principles) highlight Bauhaus’s deliberate emphasis on simplicity and functionality.
 (kadenlager, n.d.)
Above is a contemporary architectural design.it depicts a simple building design. Similarly to Gropius’s design there are no intricate or elaborate architectural features. All design elements are practical and the building is comprised of well balanced geometric forms in the same way as in Gropius’ design. Altogether this contemporary design embodies that of Gropius’s design as its use of simple geometric forms(in adherence to Bauhaus principles) highlight its emphasis on simplistic functionality.
