Women Voices Collage Series

Women’s Voices series.
These series highlights the stories of advocates who are working tirelessly to support people—including women and girls—who have been impacted by the criminal legal system. They shed light on the compounding harms of incarceration, advocate for policy changes to create justice for all, and empower others to do the same.
Research and discovery
Looking at these stories, these women went through hardship and trauma in a way that shaped their character and fueled their desire to succeed and change the legal and immigration system in America. The approach to this process was based on semantics and relating the personal experiences to shapes, color, and texture.
Lashonia Thompson-El
Her story is about she found her purpose after release and how much the program helped her–specially her mentor, and how this dynamic became a full cycle when she herself became a mentor.
Broken blocks with black tape symbolize her troubled past and healing.
The dotted and solid circles speak about reparation and how her role changes from beneficiary to mentor of the program.

Kelly Savage-Rodriguez
Kelly's story emphasized the importance of communication with her family while being in prison and how she was able to feel connected to her family despite her circumstances.
Purple is a signifier of nostalgia as she felt so far away from her family and the tearing paper speaks about this separation and pain. Mail, email and phone calls are highlighted by using actual mail stamps and numbers to reference physical mail.

Tiheba Bain
Living with a violent conviction represented a big obstacle for Tiheba. She overcame that obstacle and stood up by creating the opportunities she couldn't access for herself and others. Her story reflects on the journey moving past racism, poverty, trauma and addiction. The power of the visuals lies on her tenacity and impact of the organization she created
kim Haven
Kim's work focuses on justice reform specially for women. She has written policy in MD for voting rights, access to hygiene products for incarcerated women, conditions of confinement, and her goal is to elevate and empower formerly incarcerated women experiences to drive systemic change.
