Confronting Deforestation and Climate Change with Acoustic Data Intelligence

Rainforest conservation is the key to slowing climate change, but illegal logging destroys more than 32 million acres of forest every year.

A San Francisco-based nonprofit organization teamed up with Hitachi to co-build and deploy technical solutions to curb deforestation. The nonprofit aims to empower indigenous tribes and local partners in the fight against poaching.

Together, the two organizations developed small, custom, all-weather logic boards that listen, capture, and upload (to the cloud) audible sounds produced in the forest.

This massive soundscape data is then deciphered using a data-powered system that uses artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning to render actionable insights in response to the movements within the forest.

The nonprofit is further leveraging Hitachi’s data intelligence to separate sounds related to logging activity from natural sounds produced by the rainforest flora and fauna. To help store the large amounts of data generated from the acoustic monitoring stations, Hitachi provided its services and solutions to manage and store the data with a composable cloud data lake that makes the data available for analysis and  feeds it to AI algorithms. This collaboration is enabling the organization to take action against climate change.

So far, the nonprofit has managed to collect hundreds of years of audio, and their ambitious plan aims to record one million years of audio over the next decade.
