The illustrated book was developed in the scope of the discipline of Contexts and Practices of Illustration, included in the Master's course of Graphic Design and Editorial Projects (MDGPE) at the Faculty of Fine Arts of the University of Porto (FBAUP).
The project originated from the proposal of interaction between popular and high culture. The elements and symbologies of the painting "The Birth of Venus" by Sandro Botticelli are reinterpreted as Iracema's novel, written by José de Alencar.
The indigenous Iracema is one of the most robust representations of Brazilian's native people. She is described in analogy with Ceará's nature, representing in itself the local beauty. The construction of the narrative in counterpoint to the symbology of venus brings a reflection on identity, decolonialism and belonging.
O livro ilustrado foi desenvolvido no âmbito da disciplina de Contextos e Práticas da Ilustração, do curso de Mestrado em Design Gráfico e Projetos Editoriais (MDGPE) da Faculdade de Belas Artes da Universidade do Porto (FBAUP).
O projeto surgiu a partir da proposta de interação entre a cultura popular e a cultura erudita, onde os elementos e simbologias da obra “O Nascimento de Vênus”, de Sandro Botticelli, são reinterpretados a partir do romance de Iracema, escrito por José de Alencar.
A índia Iracema é uma das representações mais fortes dos povos originários brasileiros e é descrita em analogia com os elementos nativos do Ceará, representando em si toda a beleza existente ali. A construção da narrativa em contraponto à simbologia da vênus traz consigo uma reflexão sobre identidade, decolonialismo e pertencimento.
