Kolkata Literature Festival - Branding

Kolkata Literature Festival is a relatively young literature festival that takes places within the folds of the International Kolkata Book Fair, to celebrate the written word, and the different facets of it – publishing, story telling, theatre, documentaries to name a few.
It aims to create a platform, for people across the cross section of the society, to come on board, and discuss all forms of literature where every person who attends, gets a connect with the books and its makers.
The Kolkata Literature Festival made its debut at the 38th International Kolkata Book Fair in 2014 and since then, it has been offering to its visitors lively pulsating discussions over books, literary trend, debates and face to face interactions with their favourite authors and eminent guests.

I worked as their chief designer from the year 2017 to 2019. During my time I changed the branding and gave the festival an official mascot. I also created animated motion graphics teaser which became an instant hit as is used as the backdrop of the festival stage.
2019
KLF brand designs mainly comprised of magenta and yellow. Usually I had to use pink/magenta as the dominant colour as another Literature festival in the city had the yellow as their brand colour. But in 2019 I decided to break away from the usual norm and dared to be more challenging. I worked on the designs more efficiently so that even though the colours would match, our design will eventually stand out.
2018
In 2018 I tried to reinvent the designs again. Unlike other literature festivals in the country, KLF likes to create fresh new designs every year. This year after multiple rejections initially from the client, I got back to the basics - the elements of Kolkata. This was also my first year when I worked on the entire project remotely.
2017
My first as the chief designer. I was still in college, and hence very inexperienced as this was the first real branding job I had got. Therefore I tried to take a lot of inspiration from other literature festivals. However my designed got approved only after the first few drafts. Since I knew motion-graphics, I also offered the client a Festival Teaser which they liked instantly.
KLF Designs previously...
did not have any proper branding. The designs were inconsistent throughout. They did not have a mascot either, which I felt was important, especially because the festival tends to bring in new designs every year. Hence a mascot would be crucial for recollection of the brand.
