Slowly: Just Breathe

Erratic, fast and shallow breathing is a direct reflection of modern-life. The downside of shallow breathing inhibit oxygen intake, it encourages lung to atrophy and lose much of its natural elasticity. Deep breathing is a way to reduce stress, when one breathe deeply it sends messages to his or her brain to calm it down. As Buddhist monk Thích Nhất Hạnh stated, “breath is the bridge, which connects life to consciousness, which unties the body to the thoughts whenever the mind becomes scattered."

Just Breathe is a site-specific artwork outside the corridors of Level 3 Design Communication’s classroom consisting of floor decals that read, “inhale” and “exhale” and a piece of mirror with the words mounted on the wall. When one is participates in the breathing exercise, he or she is following the steps of meditation that can help prepare them from the "battle field" ahead. The experiment intends to remind people to slow down and take a breather.
