The Pacific Gas and Electric Company has caused numerous forest fires due to negligent maintenance of its equipment. The most recent of these fires includes the deadliest and most destructive wildfire in California's history, the Camp Fire of 2018 which resulted in the deaths of 85 people, 18,804 buildings destroyed, and countless wildlife loss. PG&E is currently under investigation for their involvement in causing the Zogg Fire in 2020 (4 deaths, 204 building destroyed in Shasta County) and the Dixie Fire in 2021 which has already destroyed 66 buildings in Butte and Plumas Counties and is still burning as of 7/31/2021.
