About Me

I am a 22 year old recent English Literature with Creative Writing graduate from Newcastle Unversity. I currently live at home in Bristol. I love designing, writing, reading and music... and sewing.

I started sewing in April 2020, when the first lockdown began. I had no prior experience, other than a couple of workshops I did at school. My mum had an old Singer sewing machine that was older than me and that she used mainLy for repairs and fancy dress outfits. So from April, I spent my lockdown teaching myself how to sew - Youtube, Pinterest and free patterns were my best friends. I started off with cheap fabrics and materials, sewing for myself, but by July I saw an opportunity to share my work. I set up a brand - Hyacinth G1rl - and an Instagram account. I started selling on Depop and was getting good reviews, so I decided to keep it up alongside my university degree in September, where I was starting my final year of English Literature with Creative Writing. I bought myself a sewing machine and started experimenting with old and new fabrics.
Where it really began...

In April 2021 I made a website and bought a domain name. This felt exciting! Having my own website made what I was doing feel real and added a professional flair.
In June, I did a giveaway - a way of getting people to advertise my Instagram page and gain me followers for the chance to win a couple of my popular items - a reversible halter top and an orange one shoulder top. I gained a significant number of followers from this and I was happy with the interaction I was getting.
Recently, I have been loving adding to the REWORKED section of my website. I feel that this is where I am able to be most creative with my designs, as I am creating one-of-one pieces out of pre-existing items of clothing. I love that this reduces the impact my work has on the environment, since this involves re-purposing an old item of clothing instead of creating a new one.
I am currently working on some new pieces for my Summer 21 collection in the hope that I will be able to release these in the next couple of weeks.
