Lighting of the Synagogue in Babyn Yar

We are honored to work in such an environment of powerful professionals, deeply immersed in the historical and cultural context of this place.
The project is incredibly interesting and emotional - an allusion to the book, siddur, bible, which are read together by the parishioners of the synagogue during the service. Reading a book together opens the world of wisdom, morality, history.
The symbolic synagogue, 11 meters high, looks like a book that opens and closes with the help of special mechanisms. It is decorated with patterns and texts of prayers that repeat the traditional painting of ancient synagogues in Western Ukraine - in Khodoriv and Hvozdets - destroyed during the Second World War.
The ceiling - in the form of a map of the starry sky, reproduces the position of the stars on September 29, 1941 - on the first day of mass shootings at Babi Yar. It was the ceiling of a bright deep gamut that we emphasized with light, excluding the lighting of the walls. Separate architectural accents were “drawn” on the walls, which served as a dark background, adjusted with light, and windows were drawn. Very delicate work, like drawing with light an illustration for a book. Taking into account the dynamism of the folding structure, we placed the lamps in the floor. The light is uneven, accentuated, adding a subtle dramatic atmosphere.
The synagogue was built from hundred-year-old oak wood, which was collected from old abandoned buildings from different parts of the country. We enhanced this concept of transformation with our lighting part, creating two lighting scenarios: for the closed and open structure of the synagogue.
