The pandemic has imposed major changes to our work and lifestyles, altering our views and priorities. The pandemic has impacted people of all groups at different levels, one group being the MIGRANT WORKERS. Migrant workers such as street hawkers, taxi/cab drivers or construction laborer's, the need for them to live is very important. The pandemic and hence the lockdown has created situations of job loss, stale construction industry, no customers for vendors and online marketplace has been a state of devastation for these groups of people in the country.
The site is in New Ashok Nagar, Beside Mandi in Uttar Pradesh, India. Large percentage of the ward comprises unplanned residential areas, which acts as an affordable housing option for new migrants to the city as well as the middle class strata of the city. Daily-wage laborer's, drivers, rickshaw pullers and house maids find relatively cheaper accommodation here. The social infrastructure such as schools, healthcare facilities etc. is in major deficit when unplanned areas are considered. The unauthorized colony has a high population density of about 800 persons per hectare. The colony is termed as an unplanned area because it has come up on private agricultural land which is not according to provisions of the Master Plan of Delhi.
Ground Floor Plan
CONCEPT: To conceptualize one such part of a city which has a water body (canal), inspiration has been taken from the “rural village courtyard typology”. Courtyards and public parks are integrated in center of the community such that each building share at minimum one facade to the open area or courtyard. Different activities such as skill development center, healthcare unit, open market etc. are organized in open area. Buildings are orient along E-W axis in order to reduce heat gain and achieve proper daylight. To increase social engagement in the community pop up shop is integrated with the module.

Site is well planned such that buildings provide both a comfortable and healthy indoor environment and site level or landscape strategies to improve outdoor thermal comfort. Green area is provided to increase natural ventilation and reduce dust, noise, pollution, etc.

INNOVATION
Placemaking brings diverse community members together, facilitating social interaction and engagement through the space’s design, programming, amenities, and the planning process itself. We designed a pop up shop unit which can be installed on void space of each apartment. This gives opportunities to vendors to startup their business again.
