Illustration is more than the depiction of reality. Illustration exaggerates and interferes.

Illustration is always more than the mere depiction of what is seen. It interprets and focuses. Illustrators create images that you have never seen before. Images that have the power to change the thoughts, actions and feelings of those who look at them. That's why media people and agency creatives are always on the lookout for new talent and styles, trends and techniques.

Illustration counters the flood of interchangeable photos triggered by ever better mobile phone cameras with strong images. Freistil presents outstanding new works by 157 illustrators from all over the world. Pictures that say more than a thousand words. Freistil is once again a treasure trove and trend radar, a source of inspiration and documentation. For the seventh time with enough distance so that there is really something new to discover.

At a time when it is necessary to stand up for the freedom of the word and of images worldwide, Freistil editorially focuses on illustration that shows more than others (want to) see. It illuminates the political explosive power of strong images. And introduces you to illustrators who put the fear of God into powerful men. For example, Art Spiegelman, whose underground comic Maus - The Story of a Survivor poignantly captures the story of his father, an Auschwitz survivor - and won the Pulitzer Prize for it.

Authoritarian systems fear the power of images. The more autocrats the world experiences, the more important the political significance of illustration becomes - unfortunately, however, the danger also grows for those who have the courage to hold up a mirror to the world. This issue of Freistil is therefore much more than an invitation to discover new talent.
