Commuter (2013)
Digital Photography - Camera hidden in orange tote bag

Using a camera hidden in an orange tote bag and triggering the shutter using a shutter release cable, I seek to find sense of order in the chaotic commutes on the Singapore trains that my eyes would normally miss. In essence, my hidden camera is an extension of my sense of sight, allowing me to look and examine the normally “mundane” commutes on the public transport through a different perspective.

Through my selection of photographs, I aim to capture and showcase the moments that many, including myself, might have missed as we are so trapped in our personal bubbles as we shy away from the strangers around us in the crowd – the routine, the suggestive, the objectionable.

The selection process also highlights how the camera selectively perceives and distorts reality, giving unintentional occurrences on the train a fresh narrative and meaning.
