The Garden Of Weirdness - ThePareidolics#1
Do you notice faces or shapes of animals at random places? In the clouds, texture of the wall, plug pin and so on. Ever wondered why? Well, we all have this natural superpower of ‘seeing’ faces or familiar patterns in random things. The reason is a phenomenon called Pareidolia. It is a psychological phenomenon where the human mind perceives meaningful shapes like human facial characteristics in vague data.
This work belongs to an illustrated series ThePareidolics# based on merging ‘pareidolic stimuli’ into an illustration, in an attempt to justify its correspondence with the presumed face/familiar form.
While on a journey from primal Pareidolic stimuli to the final creative output, I seek to enquire how the human mind can navigate through the chaos to find meaning…. And as an extension of my undergraduate dissertation, I sought more pragmatic ways to explore this phenomenon deeply.

This watercolour sketch-experiment poses as the very first stepping stone towards the series. Here, I went on creating random patterns through the washes, initially not highlighting any form in the process. Later as the forms became apparent, I worked a bit more on them to extract. The forms extracted are usually the ‘right-brain’ perceptions. More forms and scenes could be evoked from this very sketch.
The Chosen Stimulus
There appeared a peculiar scene happening in the upper middle section. As if a girl seated under a tree and a rabbit-like animal approaching her. This sparked my interest and I gradually began making an elaborate illustration.

The Final Illustration
Well, this is technically my first serious digital illustration. Hope you like it! More to come! Do share your thoughts using the Feedback button on the right.
