L'art de l'enfance, Tomi Ungerer · 1935–1953

Client: Museums of Strasbourg (France)
Year: 2017
Format: 24 × 32 cm
The book designed by Bureau 205 is based on an exceptional collection of drawings that Tomi Ungerer, artist, author and illustrator, produced between 1935 and 1953 (from the age of 4 to 22), and which is made up of several hundred sketches.
The editorial project is designed to respond to two complementary visions, allowing it to become a documentation and research tool, but also to reveal the spontaneity and freedom that can be found in his childhood drawings. Arranged intuitively, so as to give a glimpse of the curiosities and influences that are exercised without restricting their reading, the reproductions are punctuated by an interview with the illustrator who recalls his formative years.
The aim was to obtain an object that would be somewhere between the seriousness of a scientific catalogue and a modest form more reminiscent of the artist's school notebooks: soft binding, visible spine, multiple papers, etc.
