Conference Design : Engage, Inform and Experience

Design To Inform : Engage, Inform and Experience
Seek the light : a conference about taking a break from design.
Brief

This project was created through a brief from a third-year core paper at Massey University, Wellington. The task is to design a ‘provocation’ for a Designers Institute of New Zealand one-day conference on the topic of communication design. The conference will be held at Massey University Wellington Campus and identify several national and international speakers: an exciting event attracting design students, educators, and practitioners.
The information is presented via transmedia narrative (3 x touchpoints – Engage, Inform, Experience) and needs to be designed to be provocative and compelling.
Summary

My one day conference is about taking a break from our projects as part of the design process. It is vital to get away from your work to recharge the brain to be more productive. The point of my conference is to bring awareness about health and wellbeing for designers when working on their projects. I have used ‘seeking the light’ as a metaphor for getting away from the workload and taking time for yourself to refuel. This rhetoric worked well for my topic because designers spend a lot of their time crapped at a desk in the dark, and they need to get away from it. My rhetoric progresses by the steps of a designer leaving their workspace. I have used the colour blue throughout my design to represent freedom. Light blue, in particular, represents health and tranquillity. I have used Filson Pro as my typeface because it has playful geometric qualities and humanistic qualities related to my topic.
My third touchpoint is an activity that is part of the conference. The activity answers a question on the wall and writes it on the large, glowing, transparent cylinders. I have light projected onto the ground like it's a path guiding you away from the dark.
