In the digital era, the internet and social networks have become the main means of information and communication, capable of transmitting messages instantly and globally. In this context, we have seen a change in the paradigm of social movements, which have been asserting themselves strongly on digital platforms. The hashtag, which first appeared in 2007, is now a tool for several socio-political campaigns on social networks that allows creating virtual discussions and manifestations, being accessible to everyone.
This project explores the use of the hashtag #PrayFor, as a universal response to a series of terrorist attacks that have occurred, especially in the West. In recent years, the world has seen a series of attacks that have jeopardized the peace and security of society and that, for this reason, has generated a wave of solidarity on social networks through the sharing of this hashtag on various platforms.
It includes a publication about the history of the hashtag, the 28 variants of hashtag #PrayFor and the benefits and the consequences of its use and a website that explains the project and complements the publication through a list organized in 3 different ways — by popularity, date and country.
The project seeks to reflect on its use as well as the consequences of its usefulness. For that, a list is presented, formed with the different variants of the hashtags #PrayFor, which aims to lead the reader to reflect on the theme presented — on terrorism and the way it is mediated and how this new digital tool like the hashtag manage to shape our society and culture.
