A La Jolla Playhouse workshop production of Chagall, a new dance musical created by internationally-renowned composer Yale Strom, acclaimed choreographer John Malashock, and the Playhouse's own Tom Dugdale as Writer/Director. The life of Marc Chagall – the most famous Jewish painter in the world – will be explored through the key women of his life and the cities he lived in: Vitebsk, Moscow, Paris, NYC. Chagall's work was often referred to as "Surreal" and the dance musical will reflect the genius, color and vitality of the man and his work. No matter where Chagall lived and when, his touchstone was his hometown of Vitebsk, a town that gave Chagall the spirituality, color, poignancy and humor that imbued the artist's work throughout his career.
