POMPEII ( 𐌐𐌖𐌌𐌐𐌄 )
ITALY
Pompeii was a thriving Roman city located in the region of Campania in Italy. Completely buried by Mount Vesuvius eruption in 79 AD, which changed the landscape around it, and no one could remember where the city had once stood. After two millenniums passed, the city of Pompeii is "re-emerged" in a completely different time civilization. The city provides a unique glimpse into daily life in ancient Rome, including art, architecture, and engineering. Pietro Giovanni Guzzo, former director of the Pompeii Archaeological Park, once said, "Pompeii is a place that speaks of life, not death, of hope, not despair, of people who lived and loved, who laughed and cried, of a society that had its vices and virtues, that was creative, innovative and dynamic, that had moments of glory and of crisis, but always remained human."
I read a lot about Pompeii when I was a kid, and the day when I entered the Pompeii entrance gate I was thinking it's just another ruin place in Italy. But as I walked through the alleys and seeing the artifacts... they are like a puzzle that start comes together in my imagination ... and after some time I was vividly visualizing how this place once was a life with people and activities... I almost can hear the busy street noise and people talking in the houses. That was a very strange and unforgettable experience. I told myself that I will visit this place again. Enjoy!
Thank you for traveling with me!
This is part of my ongoing travel visual clips, where I share a glimpse of my travel visuals and thoughts. Each series features a paragraph about the history of the place, followed by a paragraph describing my thoughts while exploring that place. Accompanied by no more than fifteen carefully curated images that I took, each series is intended to give you the umami of travel. - Julius Yls
