Visual research: books’ design of J.R.R. Tolkien “The Hobbit, or There and Back Again”. This student project consists of 3 parts:
- book cover design
- page design
- illustrations.
"The Hobbit" was published since the 1930s about the 1990s. As this book is the love of my childhood, I spent many happy hours in search for various books (covers, illustrations, spreads) designed around the world. I took as a basis the first books published in different countries or the first books designed by certain authors and illustrators. The project considered 18 illustrators around the world, including illustrations of Tolkien himself. There are curious covers that do not reflect the plot of the book at all; there are versions for young readers and very thoughtful versions. All of them are very interesting and different. Not all illustrators were shown in the booklet for I was limited in scope of the project.
The research allowed me to plunge back into my childhood and remember the feeling of miracle associated with "The Hobbit". It was wonderful!
