Kolam: A Luminaire

Kolam: A Luminaire

Each day before dawn, during the Brahma Muhurtam and sometimes before dusk, millions of women in the town, villages and the cities of South India draw kōlam on the thresholds and floors of houses, temples and businesses. In Tamil culture, the threshold is of great significance as the meeting point of the internal and the external and kōlam is one of the many manifestations of that significance.

A Kolam is a geometrical line drawing composed of loops, drawn around a grid pattern of dots and is thought to bring prosperity to homes. This artform was the inspiration for the “kōlam” luminaire designed as part of a Techno decorative design competition.

The Kolam can be Wall Mounted or Ceiling Mounted as per Design requirement, using the varied sizes of the Conducting Rods to form interesting motifs and patterns. This makes the Kollam a dynamic design element, that can be changed by adding or subtracting “Light Bowls” to the existing fixture.
